Building Community brick by brick

HACP Highlights Supportive Services

The Housing Authority of the City of Prichard held its quarterly Program Coordinating Committee (PCC)meeting on Thursday, April 10, 2025, in partnership with the Mobile Housing Authority. This quarter's theme was"How Do You Practice Self-Care as a Service Provider?"Members had the opportunity to share what self-care means to them and discuss ways to decompress by creating vision boards, which were shared at the end of the meeting. Service providers consistently work to achieve the best outcomes for their clients, participants, and residents, often neglecting their own self-care in the process. This month's meeting served as a reminder that it is important to take a moment to rest and reset!

Michael Williams from Yardi One conducted a training session for our Family Self-Sufficiency coordinators. The training was highly informative, equipping our coordinators with the skills to enroll, assess, and exit participants from the FSS program. They also learned how to input participant interview questions, needs, goals, and services, as well as how to retrieve relevant information for the FSS program. Overall, the training was a success, and our coordinators are eager to know when the next training session will take place.

Emergecny Prepardness: What to do when disaster threatens

An emergency preparedness guide provides crucial information and instructions for preparing for different emergencies and disasters. It usually includes steps for creating an emergency plan, assembling akit with necessary supplies, and practicing responses for various scenarios. In the picture, our seniors at Thomas Hurst andRidge Manor Apartments are receiving their emergency preparedness guides.

HACP "Fabric of Giving" Clothes Drive at Ridge Manor Senior Apartments

The clothes drive held on April 11, 2025, at the Housing Authority of the City of Prichard Ridge Manor senior apartments was a great success. The residents appreciated the opportunity not only to donate items but also to engage in open discussions about community issues they felt needed attention. They shared ideas for future events, such as a potluck. This month's donations included clothing, cooking equipment, bakeware, and wall décor.

HACP Highlights Housing and Maintenance

Keep it Clean and Safe:

  • Dispose of garbage and waste properly
  • Keep your apartment clean to avoid pests and mold.
  • Address pest issues promptly, seal entry points and communicate with your landlord if you notice signs of infestation.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Maintain safe living conditions, ensure exits and entrances are clear and report anypotential hazards like peeling paint or pests.

Be Mindful of Water Usage:

  • Fix leaks promptly: Leaks can lead to water damage and increased utility bills.
  • Eliminate standing water: This reduces potential breeding grounds for pests like mosquitoes.

Focus on HVAC and Air Circulation:

  • Replace or clean air filters: This helps ensure your air conditioning unit operates efficiently and improves air quality.
  • Ensure proper ventilation: Ventilate bathrooms and kitchens to reduce humidity and prevent mold growth.
  • Consider fans for air circulation: Fans can help promote airflow and reduce the need for air conditioning

Conserve Energy:

  • Utilize energy-saving tips, like adjusting your thermostat, blocking sunlight, and using energy-efficient light bulbs to save on energy costs.
  • Communicate about potential energy-saving upgrades: Talk to your landlord about improvements that could benefit both of you by reducing energy consumption

As a renter, your responsibility is to keep your unit clean and safe, report needed repairs, and use the property and its systems reasonably. Your landlord is typically responsible for major repairs and maintaining the property's overall structural integrity.
