Essay for GMAC Bowl Scholarship
To the Judges
My name is Torian Crenshaw, I was born in
Mobile Alabama, where I have lived all my life. I am
really not a complainer; I just take life one day at
a time. I was badly burned at the age of three. I
have lived with this condition for 16 years; I am
getting better as I get older. I was a little scared
at first of people, pointing or making fun of me. I
would ask my mom “why are people looking at me like
that, and she would say, “they just don’t understand
and she said, “don’t pay them any attention.” She
always told me that I am just like everybody else
and to always keep my head up. She even said whether
I knew it or not I was a good looking young man. It
has truly been a challenge for me. Sometimes it’s
hard because even though people may not say anything
their eyes tell what there brains are thinking. I
have learned that true friends don’t care what you
look like; they judge you by your actions. I am so
happy that I am finally a senior, about to graduate
from Mattie T. Blount High School. Peer pressure
was one of my hardest dilemmas some of my friends
got involved with drugs and petty theft; I am so
glad that I chose to say no. I was talked about,
ignored and called names. I knew my life was hard
enough I did not need to add to it. I don’t have a
lot of friends, but I have my family, who will
always stand by me and never look down on me because
of how I look.
I plan to attend
Auburn
University, in Auburn, Alabama in the fall, if I
cannot secure funds for
Auburn,
S.D Bishop State, in Mobile, Alabama is my second
choice.
I plan to major in Computer Programming. I love to
work on the computer. I was employed by Prichard
Housing Authority as the assistant computer teacher,
for the Summer Enrichment Program 2004. I really
enjoyed working with the kids, I was able to teach
them a great deal, but I learned more from them than
they did from me. I loved their innocence, they did
not hold my appearance against me, they asked once
what happen and when I told them that was the end of
it.
I am also interested in politics, one day
I hope to run for the Mayor of Prichard, may be even
Senator. I would like to thank the GMAC Bowl for
giving me this opportunity to apply for this
scholarship.

Outstanding Job
Terrence Smith is a second year student at
Miles
College
in Birmingham Alabama, where he is the starting
defensive lineman for the Golden Bears. He is the
eldest of two children. Terrence’s dream is to
become a computer technologist.
He was employed by the Prichard Housing
Authority,
Neighborhood
Network Center, Harlem Area Weed and Seed Summer
2004 Enrichment Program. He was an asset to the
program. Terrance was loved and respected by the
students, his peers and the staff. He was employed
as the recreation assistant, to Coach Gamble and
Coach Johnson. His work was extraordinary, Coach
Gamble said, “ he is the type of person that you
don’t have to ask to do something, he sees the need
and just does it, there needs to be more like him.”
Terrance received the award for most dedicated youth
worker for summer 2004. He is very proud of his
accomplishment.
Terrence is truly and amazing young man, despite
the passing of his mother, he continues to strive
for his dream. He also does what he can to help his
little brother, who has always looked up to him.
School is a struggle for Terrence but he say’s “I
will make it because I believe I can.” We believe
you can too.
